(A Guiding Staff for the Spiritually Blind) written by the warrior monk Suzuki Sh艒san in 1619.
鈥淭he heart that thinks of oneself, suffers. The heart that thinks of others, is free!鈥
The Ten Precepts for Living: (Each precept was a chapter title in his book)
1. That joy lies in knowing birth and death.
2. That one must know oneself by reflecting upon oneself.
3. That one must in all things achieve sympathy with the mind of others.
4. That one must with sincerity, aid the sick.
5. That one must discern their own lot in life and know what their natural endowment is.
6. That virtue lies in avoiding dwelling upon anything.
7. That by forgetting oneself one guards oneself.
8. That one must be firmly resolved to take great care when alone.
9. That by destroying the mind one must cultivate the mind.
10. That one must give up petty gain and achieve great gain.
